Madeleine Schwinge (*1968, Waiblingen) is a German artist whose work deals with individual and social transformation phenomena in an epochal shift, more precisely with human thinking and acting and their underlying systems, with identity construction and the pursue of a good life. Using a conceptual and cross-disciplinary approach, she seeks a reconfiguration process that asks for alternative routes to livable futures in a diverse, sustainable, interconnected habitat. Her art series 'The Psychedelic Chicks' (ongoing since 2016) is a fictional all female riot Punkrock band, appearing in various media scenes. The series was nominated for The Social Art Award 2019.
She is founder and curator of the art space re:future Lab, an experimental laboratory for art and future design.
She lives and works in Berlin and Paris.
I position my artistic work at the interfaces of drawing, assemblage, object and text. I draw my inspiration from art history, philosophy, visual culture and future research. My multi-disciplinary approach is anchored between Dada, Fluxus, Punk and a meta modern art logic, questioning the status quo, speculating desirable alternatives, oscillating between informed naivety and pragmatic idealism, constantly pursuing an impossible possibility. My research based artistic practice involves further fieldwork in form of dialog with ultra-contemporary artists and experts from science, technology and humanities, whose engagement tangle the most pressing issues of our time. Doing so, I aim to investigate thinking patterns, attitudes, questions, methods and practices, in order to filter out a shared kinship of imagination, will and social dreaming.
There can be no doubt, we live in epoch changing times and accelerating upheavals and crisis. Where do we go from here? What will be the future of Human, non-human, Earth - and ourselves? Is there still hope to change it all into good? When it comes to desirable present tomorrows, it will be high time to re-listen, re-learn and re-design. Consequently to this approach, in 2020, I founded the re:future Lab, an experimental art space and cross-disciplinary practice ground; with the mission to engage in current debates, widen perspectives and catalyze transformation. Here, I confront my own work and thinking by building a collaborative network of international influential figures, with the aim to build an open platform for fiction, dialog and knowledge transfer.
More than ever, we need the free spirit and attitude of art!
